Jaw Surgery in Turkey
Home » Cosmetic Chin Surgery »It is possible to alter the chin through several operations, including cosmetic chin reduction or augmentation
How is Mentoplasty (Cosmetic Chin surgery) Performed?
The majority of surgical interventions to the chin are for cosmetic purposes. However, orthodontic treatment may also require chin surgery. I would like to note that I have not worked for a government institution since 2014, thus cannot accept government medical aid for this operation.
Chin Reduction
Jaw shaving surgery is a type cosmetic surgery. We usually prefer jaw shaving for chins that are too wide or long; however, in exceptional cases where the chin is too long, this operation may be inadequate. Hence, this practical operation is ideal for minor chin reduction operations.
Jaw shaving surgery is a performed through an incision from inside the mouth under general anesthesia and needs to be performed in an operating room. An experienced team and fully equipped hospital are crucial for better outcomes. The patient must be careful about food and drink consumption for approximately 1 month after the surgery. Your chin will recover and take its final form in only 1 month.
Does jaw surgery affect smile?
Yes, jaw surgery can affect your smile. This type of surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, is performed to correct irregularities of the jaw bones and realign the jaws and teeth to improve function and appearance. Here’s how it can affect your smile:
- Change in Facial Structure: Jaw surgery can alter the structure of your face, including the jawline and the area around the mouth. This can change how your smile looks.
- Muscle Adaptation: The muscles around your mouth and jaw may need time to adapt to the new alignment. This can temporarily or sometimes permanently affect your smile.
- Improved Function: If the surgery corrects a misalignment, it may actually improve your smile functionally, making it easier and more comfortable to smile.
- Nerve Impact: There’s a risk of nerve damage during jaw surgery, which can affect the sensation in your lower lip and chin area. This could impact your smile, although surgeons usually try to minimize this risk.
- Healing Process: Initially, swelling and healing from the surgery can affect your smile. It usually takes some time for the final results to settle in.
- Psychological Impact: Adjusting to the changes in facial appearance post-surgery can also have a psychological impact on how a person smiles.
It’s important to discuss these potential changes with your surgeon before undergoing jaw surgery. They can provide a more detailed understanding of how the specific procedure might affect your smile based on your individual case.
Cosmetic Surgery to the Tip of the Jaw
There are a variety of available methods to contour the tip of the jaw. For example, if a person has a recessed chin, it is possible to fill it with fillers and silicone. If the chin is short, it can be lengthened and brought forward with surgical screws. If it is too prominent, it can be reduced with jaw shaving.
Surgery of the tip of the jaw is not a standard operation. The person’s jaw structure will determine the type of the required intervention. Surgery should be performed in accordance with the facial structure. Most patients that request facial operations or a nose job don’t realize that the jaw is central to their complaints. We commonly correct the jaw as a part of cosmetic facial operations. But, as mentioned before, the condition of the jaw is what will determine the required intervention.
Orthognathic surgery (Jaw Surgery)
Orthognathic surgery is more commonly known as jaw surgery. It aims to address physical issues of the face by tampering with the upper and lower jaws to eliminate crookedness or deformations.
Orthognathic surgery is also useful in resolving problems with upper and lower jaws and how they meet. In other words, jaw surgery is practical for both cosmetic and physical issues. Some patients require orthodontic treatment for their teeth, commonly known as “wearing braces”.
We request a radiological examination prior to every orthognathic surgery. The results of this examination help us determine the skeletal deformities to prepare an adequate operation plan. For most cases, at least one of the upper and lower jaws are misaligned. After orthodontic and skeletal analyses, we plan the extent of the surgery.
Jaw surgeries are performed under general anesthesia through an incision in the mouth, leaving no visible scars. An experienced team and fully equipped hospital are crucial for satisfactory outcomes. The operation will take approximately 1.5 hours for one jaw and 3 hours for both jaws. The patient will not feel any kind of pain during the operation.
What to Do After Orthognathic Surgery
The patient will stay in the hospital for one to two days after orthognathic surgery. They need to consume only clear fluids for 2-3 days following the operation. After 3-4 days, they can gradually transition to solid foods.
If the patient was operated for only one jaw, they can go back to their normal lives after only a week. This duration is 10-14 days for patients with double jaw surgery. The jaw does not need to be wired shut following the surgery. Some of my surgeon colleagues think differently, but let’s just say ‘different strokes for different folks’. The reason I mention this here is because it is a question I frequently receive. The patient will not have any problems eating or speaking.
Orthognathic Surgery Prices (Jaw Surgery Prices)
We used to provide pricing information for cosmetic operations. However, jaw surgery prices are too variable to give one average price estimate. Jaw surgery prices change a lot from person to person, according to their needs. Firstly, some patients require surgery on just one jaw, whereas others require both jaws to be altered. Some patients have protruding jaws, whereas others have receding jaws. In short, it is not possible to determine the type or method of the surgery without a thorough evaluation. Hence, providing pricing information would not be correct. I believe the institutions that provide pricing information do so for commercial interests without detailed and accurate assumptions.
Calculating the cost of surgery cannot be fathomed without examining the patient first. A definite price can only be provided after the patient is examined and the ideal procedure and hospital are decided. If you would like to learn about orthognathic surgery prices, feel free to contact us.
