Cosmetic nipple surgery is mostly performed to correct inverted nipples. These operations are more common than one would imagine, as this is a prevalent medical condition.

Inverted Nipples

Inverted nipples are usually caused by genetic factors. They usually develop during puberty or due to inadequate development. Short milk ducts retract the nipples and cause them to become inverted.

This condition is treatable. It is possible to correct inverted nipples through widening the blood vessels or through stretching the surrounding tissues. The correct course of action is determined as a result of the initial examination. I prefer not to decide on a definite treatment method prior to examining the patient. Depending on the physical structure, it is sometimes possible to treat inverted nipples with vacuum. If this is not a viable option, there are several other available methods, such as tissue transfer.

The Size of the Areola

Areola is the medical name of the brown area that surrounds the nipple. The areola is congenitally large in some people, which can be perceived as a cosmetic issue. It is possible to correct this condition through an areola reduction surgery. This operation is a small procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia in a short time. The patient will be invited for a follow-up one week after the operation. After the follow-up examination, there will be no further interventions.

Can plastic surgery change nipples?

Yes, plastic surgery can change nipples in terms of size, shape, position, and projection. This type of surgery is often part of breast augmentation, reduction, or reconstruction but can also be performed as a standalone procedure. Common nipple-related plastic surgeries include:

  1. Nipple Reduction: This procedure reduces the size of the nipple if it is perceived as too long or wide. It can be done by removing some of the skin at the base of the nipple or along the shaft of the nipple.
  2. Areola Reduction: This surgery reduces the size of the areola (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) if it is disproportionately large compared to the breast.
  3. Nipple Augmentation: In cases where nipples are inverted or flat, surgery can help to create more projection. This can be particularly important for individuals seeking a more typical nipple appearance.
  4. Nipple Repositioning: During breast lift or reduction surgeries, nipples may be repositioned to create a more natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance on the newly shaped breasts.
  5. Nipple Reconstruction: This is often performed as part of breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. The nipple and areola can be reconstructed using tissue from other parts of the body or through medical tattooing to create a nipple-like appearance.
  6. Correction of Inverted Nipples: Surgery can correct inverted nipples, which are nipples that retract into the breast rather than protrude. Various techniques can be used to bring the nipple outwards.

As with any surgery, there are risks and considerations, including scarring, changes in nipple sensation, and the potential impact on breastfeeding ability. It’s crucial to have a thorough consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals, the options available, and the potential outcomes and risks associated with nipple-related surgery.

Why Does the Areola Become Large?

The areola is large in some people due to indeterminate reasons. I find that this condition is most commonly genetic rather than developmental. However, it is certain that women with larger breasts have significantly larger areolas. We find that the majority of the patients that request areola reduction have large breasts. Consequently, we commonly perform this operation combined with breast reduction. The physician will reduce the size of the areola to fit the size of the breast even if it is not specifically requested by the patient to obtain optimal aesthetic outcomes. Cosmetic Nipple Surgery

Inverted Nipple Treatment

It is possible to non-surgically treat inverted nipples through one simple act: breastfeeding. A significant number of women with inverted nipples find that their condition gets better after they start to nurse. Initially, the child tries and sucks the nipple towards their mouth, which will reverse the inversion. It is known that even healthy nipples can become longer after breastfeeding due to suckling.
